| Every
breed is special, but some are more so than others. This is where
we feature our special needs dogs, and gaze hounds.
As representatives of the Southern California Whippet Association
(S.C.W.A.), we have successfully placed 38 whippets
over the last year...and 25 the year before. (See our 2003 SCWA Rescue Report)

Whippets and Greyhounds like to snuggle - perhaps too much!
NOTE TO POTENTIAL ADOPTERS

Many whippets are adopted directly from applications that we keep on file. These whippets never make it to this web page.
The whippet on the right was never on the web site - and was recently placed with an applicant we had on file.
Sending in an application form is very important if you are seriously looking for a sighthound to adopt.
Adoptable Sight Hounds
If you are interested in a whippet, greyhound, or other sight-hound, please fill out an application formand contact us. ALL Whippet adoptions begin with an application.

GALAHAD, Whippet, Male
Galahad is a 16 week-old purebred
male WHIPPET puppy.
This is a litter runt, and it looks as though he is going to stay really small.
He is super friendly, outgoing, fearless and very funny. This little guy has been indulged by people and other dogs alike, so he is certain that the whole world loves him. We do.
Good addition to a family with a single whippet looking for an annoying little brother. We definitely prefer an experienced home and suggest one with children 6 or older. He is a puppy and needs time, attention and training. Galahad is a breed that attaches itself to people and does not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time. He is crate-trained, uses a doggie door, and comes to his name, and LOVES to ride in the car. He enjoys wrestling with other dogs....a lot. Galahad has an infectious personality, and a GREAT smile for such a little boy, he is proof that terrific things can come in small packages. Put your shoes away with this little runt around,he'll get 'em.

O'Douhl, Greyhound, Male
O'Douhl is an 18 mo old purebred male
GREYHOUND.
This is not a track dog, but he is very innocent. He has never lived in a house, and is very sweet. He will need a family with the time to train him and give him attention. This breed of dog quickly becomes very devoted to their people. This is NOT an outside dog, however, they need to be protected from both the heat and the cold. They are clean, low maintenance and easily trainable.
They do not need more exercise than any other breed of dog, and generally love to leash walk. they REALLY love to spend time with their people.
This is a young friendly dog and would be fine as a second dog.
Will he chase your cat? maybe....can he be trained not to? probably...many do.
Will he love your kids..most definitely.
Smaller than most Greyhounds, he is a great size for someone who wants a big dog but not a huge one. |

Cinnamon, Grehound, Female
GREYHOUNDS can be very silly, and often find themselves compacted into very small spaces when it is necessary....we love to sit in water.
My name is Cinnamon, I am a 3 year old non track female and I am available...need a good laugh?

APRIL
April is a small female purebred GREYHOUND
she is smaller than most, not much taller than a good sized Whippet. Very sweet and very inexperienced. She comes up to people and is what we call a "leaner", she likes to be close. She has had an injury before she came here, to one of her eyes and is getting antibiotic drops for it, hopefully it will completely clear up.
She is delightful, and what a great size for people who say "I love Greyhounds, but they are so big". Not this girl |

DONNER
1 mo old male
purebred GREYHOUND
He is beautiful, sweet and very shy.
He came off of a large piece of property where he and his siblings were allowed to run free and did not have much contact with people.
In spite of his shyness, he has a nice temperament, and is agreeable.
He has a human friend who comes in once a week to talk to him and pet him. Donner has never been leash trained, but his siblings, who are here, are doing well, and learning also.
This guy is not large for a Greyhound and very sweet.
Been no where, and done nothing...everything you show him he will have experienced for the first time.
He will need attention and training and for some time, some TLC.
Worth the work.

MAY
14 month old purebred female
GREYHOUND
April and May are most likely littermates, and both are very small for Greyhounds. If we did not know better we would say they are a mix of Whippet and Greyhound, they are that size.
Friendly, loving and affectionate. They will need training and attention and you will be well rewarded with a wonderfully loving, clean and intelligent pet.
This is not a breed of dog to be left out in the backyard, they like to live closely with their people. They have been doing it for thousands of years. This is an ancient breed. |

SARATOGA
1 year old purebred male
GREYHOUND
this youngster also came from a property where he pretty much ran his own life. He is learning to walk on a leash and is living in a kennel run with a bed and a roommate. He likes people, is still a little shy...he simply is not sure what is expected of him, but he is learning every day. He is handsome, and will not be as tall as many Greyhounds. He has a wonderful innocent and open temperament and is very loving. |

Eddie, Whippet, Male
Eddie Spaghetti is a 10 year old male
pulled from the city shelter, tired, thin and worn out. He has been in a foster home, and is now fat, sassy, healthy, old—but good.
He LOVES to talk to people...he will sing along with you, tell you how his day has gone until you hold his muzzle and remind him that he has told you enough now.
He will complain, and tell jokes. This is a silly boy.
He LOVES toys, and will carry them all over the place, but he also is a garbage hound. He may have been eating from the trash for a while and he needs to have it out of his reach. Eddie also LOVES people food..why not. He loves to go through cupboards, so keep the cake mixes and crackers on the top shelf. Really. An excellent addition to a home than already has Whippets and for humans with a great sense of silly and a good sense of humor.

BEAUTIFUL SISSI, Greyhound, Female
Sissi, is 6 year old purebred s/female GREYHOUND. They don't come any nicer, or sweeter than dear Sis.
Sweet, quiet, gets along with other dogs. Do you have a boy Greyhound who might want a girlie friend?
She is beautiful, this photo does not do her justice.
She has lived in a home. She is a former track racer from Arizona. Soft, sweet, willing to please, easy to handle, and quiet.
There is no cleaner breed of dog.

 |
WINNIE, Greyhound, Female
Winnie is a 4 year old female Greyhound. She is a
slightly pink brindle...very unusual color and an extraordinary dog.
She is not a track dog.
Winnie is a superior athlete and when she feels that she is being neglected, she can clear any fence in a heart beat to find something to do. This makes her difficult to place, and she is very friendly, loving and playful, it is a shame. Do you have a secure yard and time to share with a beautiful, fun loving gal? She gets along with other dogs, especially males. We think she would probably chase your cat but she would also keep other pesky critters out as well. What a bonus. What a nice dog, she has been here too long. |
 |
HAL, Greyhound, Male
Hal is a 3 year old purebred Greyhound ex racer from the Tucson track.
Happy, gentle, agreeable and gets along with humans and other dogs. I am Lover Boy's room mate, although I enjoy the company of ladies also. I am used to smaller dogs. I am a great guy and deserve a great home. Looking for a big love dog? Someone to really test out that underused sofa you have?
I like going for walks, and snuggling. I am curious about everything and very gentle. I have the cutest ears, everyone tells me that |

Mona-Mona, Long Dog, Female
Mona-Mona is what is called a Longdog which is a mixture of two or more sighthounds. (Sighthounds are dogs that hunt by sight, commonly the racing breeds).
She is about 5 years old. She is probably Whippet, Saluki and Deerhound - a mixture that is commonly called a Staghound. She is shorter than a Deerhound, more the size of a Saluki. She has a rough brindle coat. She is friendly, and loving with people and a good hunter.
She is a smart dog, she learns things very quickly.

EROS, Greyhound, Male
Eros is a 3 year old purebred AKC registered Greyhound -
Eros is not a retired track dog. He has been around kids, and other dogs, he is familiar around poodles and poms as well as young Whippets and other Greys. He has never been around cats and we wouldn't put him with one.
He has been started in obedience and is a beautiful and loving dog.
Eros' owner had to leave the country suddenly and was unable to take him with, so he is waiting for a forever home with someone to be his companion once again.
This is a rare and beautiful animal

A Note About Our Rescue Dogs...
Some of these very sensitive dogs have been in more than one home and they have their own baggage.
Keep in mind that when we note a specific problem with the dog, we believe it is something that needs to be acknowledged and that the success of a placement really depends on the willingness of the adoptive home to be able to adapt and/or fulfill the dog's needs. To take a dog and then attempt to "change" it is really unfair to everyone. Some are simply perfect the way they are and some are not. The placement is perfect, however, when you respect the needs of the dog, and are realistic in your expectations. We will never knowingly place a difficult dog in a home unless you are well aware of what it may involve. |
A Whippet Adoption Success Story...

(from bottom to top): Stanley (Loo), Chyna, Tanner
All three were either in rescue, a shelter, or otherwise in need of a home.
Loo has since crossed the rainbow bridge (at age 13), but Chyna and Tanner are alive and well - living the good life in their forever home with two more friends: Zephyr and Merlyn. They are all exceptionally well-behaved whippets - and we can take no credit for it since they came to us house-broken, leash-trained and wonderful. We enjoy taking them to the Annual Pet Expo in Orange county where they are whippet ambassadors.
